General Safety For The Elderly
Members of the elderly population are often hospitalized for injuries that often lead to a necessary care or even death. Because of this, it’s important for us to be aware of possible hazards that could cause injury to our elderly loved ones.
Clothing. While this doesn’t sound like a major concern, it is important to keep an eye on what our loved ones are wearing. This includes fit clothing that isn’t too long. Lightweight clothing that can be worn in layers is also a good idea. Shoes are important for preventing falls – they should have non-slip soles.
Weather. Changes in weather can affect elderly more than others – especially when the colder months hit. Take some time to inspect your loved one’s heating system and make sure it’s working properly as well as has proper ventilation. You might want to encourage moderate exercise to have them help keep their blood circulating and body temperatures up during the colder months.
Food. Because the elderly are more susceptible to illness and take longer to recover from illness, it’s especially important to keep an eye on food preparation and handling. Additionally, age and medications can affect taste so it’s sometimes hard to tell by taste if food has spoiled. Important things to do are to keep all perishables refrigerated and to make sure food is thoroughly cooked.
Medication. As people age, their digestive systems change. Because of this, medication can enter the bloodstream differently and because the circulation system works more slowly it could be delivered to parts of the body more slowly as well. Additionally, the nervous system changes as we age so the risk of experiencing side effects changes as we age as well. Another concern for elderly is that they often have medications for more than one condition and the risk of drug interactions grows with each additional medication. To help counteract these changes, it’s important for your elderly loved ones to keep track of side effects and symptoms and to make sure to meet with their doctor often to make sure the drugs are working effectively.
